Prologue

La famiglia is heilig in la bella Italia.

Ferrari Dino 308 GT4

Family means everything in Italy. So the fact that Enzo Ferrari named this beautiful 308 GT4 after his deceased son Dino, is pretty special. Pretty special is also the model itself: the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 is the very first production model from Maranello equipped with a V8 mid-engine. Today that’s quite standard, but a 2+2 version in this configuration is still unique, even by Ferrari standards. As a result, the 308 GT4 Dino is the one and only 4-seater Ferrari ever to race under the factory flag. The design is remarkable too: not Pininfarina, but Bertone was ordered to shape the Ferrari 308 GT4. And for the very first time, he designed a series production Ferrari model. However, this, as well as the history and condition of our brilliantly restored 308, caused an unanimous internal judgement at Prins: technically and optically you’re looking at the most gorgeous GT4 Dino we’ve ever had for sale. And you can be the next owner.

History

In 1975 everything seemed to come together for Ferrari: the Scuderia became world champion in Formula 1 and also captured the drivers’ title with Niki Lauda behind the wheel. A whole other kind of success was achieved in the US: in 1975 the Dino 308 GT4 was the only Ferrari officially and legally imported by North America, using the recent F1 success as a marketing tool in a very clever way. There’s no such thing as coincidence; our Ferrari 308 GT4 is from the exact same year according to its birth certificate, April 1975 to be precise. The next thing we know is that a Canadian from Toronto has taken care of the classic thoroughly. Invoices between 2002 and 2009 tell us he left nothing to chance. Next, the Dino GT4 was serviced every year from 2009 to 2015. One year later, the Ferrari ended up in Dutch hands. In 2019 the local masters of Classic Job gave the characteristic bodywork all the magic it needed, putting maximum effort in it. Italauto subsequently focused on the technique, resulting in a perfectly driving, dazzlingly beautiful 308 GT4 Dino… Exclusively available at Prins.

Exterior

In the 70s the combination Bertone and Marcello Gandini was known for its sleek, angular looking cars. Take for instance the legendary Lamborghini Countach and Lancia Stratos; both drawn by the exact same man as the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4. It meant Enzo chose to drive a different path, by not hiring Pininfarina for this project. It was the first time Bertone designed a series production model for Ferrari. And it wasn’t his last assignment… The truth is Gandini was capable of designing a pure sports car with a clean shape, creating room for 4 seats at the same time. The condition of our 308 GT4 is just as clean and pure, while the narrower grille shows it’s a first series model. However, seen by the Ferrari logo’s instead of Dino badges, it still got a factory upgrade afterwards. Also new is the Azzuro Metalizzato lacquer, an original factory color, however the car was originally delivered in the color ‘Nocciola’. The air intakes behind the rear side windows reveal the unique V8 mid-engine configuration.

Interior

Inside the Dino 308 GT4 the original Beige upholstery was exchanged for Nero leather. So now you can easily take a seat with your jeans on without worrying about it. The stunning 3-spoke Momo steering wheel has the same kind of finish and again there’s a Prancing Horse on it, replacing the Dino designation. Analog meters, characteristic switches and aluminum shift patterns are typical seventies. The 2+2 setup remains special; somehow you don’t expect those 2 extra seats in the back. But friends and family surely will appreciate it.

Technique & performance

It’s Ferrari tradition that the type designation reveals something about the engine. The 308 GT4 has “30” in it, referring to almost 3.0 liters (2926.90 cc) of engine capacity, while the “8” stands for the number of cylinders. The 2.9 V8 drives, accelerates and sounds as it should. What a wonderful machine! Leaving all 255 horses (according to the European spec.) behind on the track gives you that enchanting Ferrari feeling. You don’t need a fable saying Niki Lauda would have interfered with the technology to experience it.

Kind regards,
Prins Classics.
