This beautifully maintained Alfa Romeo Spider Type 4 has been registered in the name of our colleague Hans for 16 years now. He had the 2.0 liter engine overhauled in 2021. Now that the passionate Prins chauffeur is ready to part with his classic Alfa, we are exclusively looking for a genuine fan. That shouldn’t be a problem with such a type of car… Have you ever visited the Netherlands before?
History
The production of the iconic Alfa Romeo Spider lasted for almost 30 years. This latest evolution of the 1st generation Spider is retro enough to reflect the original Duetto, but at the same time it has a modern touch, so it still doesn’t look old-fashioned. Series 4 or ‘Type 4’ dates from the early 1990s and was only manufactured for 3 years. Long enough to make someone like Hans enthusiastic. He bought his Rosso gem in 2008 and kept it for over a decade and a half. About 3 years ago he decided to overhaul the power unit. Of course this was also done with lots of passion!
Exterior
Don’t expect any miracles: with over 175,000 km of experience, our bright red Alfa Romeo Spider 2.0 is no longer completely immaculate. But does that also make it less beautiful? Not as far as we’re concerned! The Rosso Alfa lacquer is as fiery and intense as always. So it has lost nothing of its Italian shine. At the same time, its pure character shines through: this is a driver’s car and it has been used that way too! Type 4 is distinguished by its bumpers and exterior mirrors painted in body color, bigger sills and rear light units that are connected by a narrow red reflector. Design features such as the off-center positioned exhaust and round headlights remained intact, even after the last facelift! Furthermore, every Alfa Spider can be recognized by its stretched, slim profile. This one too. A chrome finish on the door handles + wipers, along the headlights and windshield provide 60 vibes. Did you already spot the red valve caps on the wheels?
Interior
The upholstery of the open Alfa interior is very tasteful: light brown leather combined with a black top of the dashboard and a wooden Nardi sports steering wheel. Also pay attention to details such as the tiny logo on the chrome part of the wooden gear knob; it makes the Alfisti happy! Another reason to smile in the Spider cockpit is the overall condition: it’s really neat, especially for a car of this respectable age. A set of analog instruments stare at the driver, begging him or her to move. Time to lower the black soft-top behind the leather seats and leave the Pioneer radio for what it is. That characteristic Alfa rumble sounds much better anyway!
Technique
With the letters ‘IE’, the Italians made it clear that the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder in the Type 4 had Multipoint Injection. Fortunately, Alfa Romeo didn’t want to let go of the old-school throttle response. The 126 horses in the front still feel nice and lively, and are send to the rear axle by a manual 5-speed gearbox. A sporty driving experience is guaranteed! Do like Hans: drive every day in style. Classic Spider style. Looking forward to meeting you in Holland!
