Alfa Romeo Spider

This genuine Alfa Romeo classic has proven to be an all-time driver’s car. Sure, we’re fine with it if you intend to store the Spider 1.6 Type 3 safely behind closed doors to protect the beautiful design, but don’t forget to have fun with it! Your predecessor felt the same way: the Alfist we’re talking about, owned the Alfa Spider “Aerodinamica” for 17 years and had a great time behind the wheel during summertime. In addition to the looks, the classic is also technically fully prepared to give it a go. Ready to hit the road next season?

History
When you think of an Italian roadster, you automatically think of the Alfa Romeo Spider. The stylish 2-seater was introduced in 1966. After the Duetto, the model evolved into the Coda Tronca, Aerodinamica and Type 4. The 3rd series or “Type 3” got that nickname because of the package of aerodynamic adjustments. Our 1600 version dates from 1986 and made it to the Netherlands after 8 years. Since 2007, the Spider has been part of an impressive Alfa collection which is now stored at Prins. Meanwhile, its former owner neatly maintained the open classic, gave it love and above all: took it on summer adventures! So anyone who takes a seat in this blue gem is assured of putting a lot of experience on the road.

Exterior
Of all original Spider versions, the Aerodinamica is perhaps the most striking one. When Type 3 was released in 1983, the open Romeo was already putting smiles on our faces for 17 years. The Aerodinamica stood out thanks to the body kit that was supposed to give the car a more modern look. In addition to the modified bumpers, grille and exterior mirrors, the integrated rear spoiler is particularly striking: like the other plastics, it wasn’t painted in color, giving it an extra characteristic appearance. Like the stunning Pininfarina design would ever age… The round headlight units, slim bodywork and great charms always remained intact. In blue-grey, our Alfa Spider 1600 is quite contemporary and not a very common combination. Loving it!

Interior
Driving an Alfa Romeo is a joyful thing to do. The Spider adds some extra flavor to it, so the interior must be a suitable place to spend a lot of time in. Our classic doesn’t disappoint: the Nero leather seats and wooden Nardi sports steering wheel fit brilliantly. There’s more wood in the center console, on the gear shift with original Alfa logo, plus there are wooden decorative strips and door handles in the internal door trim. The authentic dashboard is typical 80s, but the minimalistic layout says something about the earlier versions of the Alfa Spider. Not so much time to get all nostalgic though. Time to fire-up the engine!

Technique
First, please lower the black soft top. That’s the only way to listen to the 1.6 liter 4-cylinder Twin Cam engine carefully. The 1570 cc power unit sends 104 hp and 142 Nm to the rear wheels; enough to do justice to the playful character of the Alfa Romeo Spider. More important, however, are the steering behavior and handling: it’s sharp, it’s fun! Because the weight could be kept limited those days, agility is perhaps its greatest strength. Feel free to try it out for yourself, as a foretaste of what will hopefully be a sunny season…
