Prologue

Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale 1600

An absolute rarity and a true masterpiece in terms of design: the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale a.k.a. Giulia SS emits nothing but pure beauty and exclusivity! The model was announced back in 1963 as the successor to the Giulietta Sprint Speciale. Although the differences in design (fortunately) were small, the Giulia made a lot of technical progress. Progress was also made by this specific car after a body-off restoration and 100% correct maintenance over the years. It has been newly delivered in Germany, got matching numbers, front disc brakes and full (service) documentation. Although the Alfa Giulia Sprint Speciale 1600 is in superb shape on the inside and outside, there’s still enough patina to discover, telling you that this car made some serious history. Exactly how we like it at Prins!

History
The Alfa Romeo Giulia SS is an extraordinary valuable and desirable classic. Which is partly due to the aerodynamic design, but also to the rareness: only 1,400 of this version have been produced worldwide. That means an opportunity to own one will not come very easily. Especially in a stunning condition like this one! The Sprint Speciale adventure started at the Turin Motor Show in 1957: the first 101 cars were homologation models and had a 750 SS badge. In March 1963, the Giulia SS was presented at the Geneva show to succeed the Giulietta SS. The matured name owes the Giulia mainly to the larger 1600 engine. About 2 years after the model launch, our classic Alfa was delivered new in Germany, followed by an adventure in the United States being in possession of Mr. Elliot. In 1991 the Italian ended up in Dutch hands. Thanks to a professional body-off restoration during the earlier years, the Alfa Giulia Sprint Speciale 1600 has lost none of its originality. Documentation on the restoration process and full maintenance history are included. Even the correspondence with the 1st American owner is included!

Exterior
For sure, the wonderful classic inspires to write many letters. With an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.28, the aerodynamics turned out to be just as efficient as the Chevrolet Corvette C6. No manufacturer could match this for more than 20 years! The mesmerizing Bertone bodywork show zero traces of rust, contains correct panel fittings and has genuine beautiful body parts. The silver-grey lacquer underlines the timeless character of Tipo 101.21, as the Giulia SS was also called internally. The strikingly low nose, strong sloping roofline and upward kink behind the doors give the Alfa Romeo an appearance that is as powerful as it is streamlined. The front wheel arch edges are particularly elegant too, with lines extended far into the screens. The shape of the flares at the rear-end even resembles the aerodynamic philosophy that the Scuderia Ferrari F1 engineers currently use. Combined with the chic chrome parts, one thing is certain: we can’t keep our eyes off this magnificent machine!

Interior
There’s lots of originality to discover on the inside as well. The dark blue leather upholstery is neatly cared for. However, don’t expect a pair of unused seats: a healthy dose of patina is included. In short, an ideal mix of perfection and history! The leather dashboard was only applied to the Alfa Giulia SS 1600, differing it from its predecessor. The back seat looks like it’s new and even the radio is still completely original!

Technique
The biggest change compared to the Giulietta Sprint Speciale is the technique though. The 4-cylinder gained some serious capacity to 1,570 cc. Our 1600 is in a very exciting condition and has twin Weber 40 DCOE2 carbs plus an output of 112 hp. Most Giulia SS models had front disc brakes, including this one. They are incredible useful too, with a top speed of 200 km/h… A transmission overhaul explains the smooth and solid control of the 5-speed manual gearbox. The differential has also been completely overhauled. Only original Alfa Romeo parts have been used for maintenance and you can feel it. Our Giulia Sprint drives just as “Speciale” as it looks! Visit Holland and have a taste of it during a test-drive at Prins, as long as this classic dream car is still available…
