It’s one of the longest produced Mercedes cars ever. And that says a lot since the manufacturer has a tradition to stick with their model for a longer period than most others. Generation 3 of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class – internally called R107, was and is extremely characterful. Particularly this originally German delivered, perfectly maintained 350 SL. Even with an über-bold, yet soft Ambragelb exterior color, the roadster looks very classy. That timeless is the design. Enthusiasts cannot get enough of the technique too: the 3.5 liter V8 is extremely smooth and runs fantastically. Electric windows + antenna, a hardtop and full history is included.
History
We all know the story behind the legendary Mercedes 300 SL “Gullwing”, but it was the Roadster version that ultimately set the base for many new generations. After the launch of the first open SL in 1955, the W121, number two followed in 1963 and was called W113. Both models were on the market for 8 years. Quite a long time, but not as long as the 3rd generation, produced from 1971 to 1989. Mercedes-Benz managed to refine the roadster from time to time, ensuring that it remained the star among sporty convertibles. The 350 SL with V8 was involved from the start, until the 380 became its successor in 1981. Our specific car dates from 1979 and was one of the last 3.5 liter 8-cylinders. In that same year the 350 SL was delivered new to the 1st owner on May 4 by Mercedes Niederlassung Hannover. In other words: this is a genuine German and not an imported American like many others. In the mid-80s, the 350 SL was exported to Switzerland and ended up in the hands of an MB Club chairman. He managed to keep the roadster the longest of all and is also responsible for keeping the maintenance perfect. Feel free to check it in the service history, going all the way back to May ’79…
Exterior
The Mercedes-Benz 350 SL has matching colors, meaning that the Ambragelb (code 624) on our classic is the same as the one on the original registration. The bodywork is super sleek; the straight lines make it very timeless and characteristic at the same time. Compared to its predecessor, the R107 is rather revolutionary than evolutionary. However, many years later it turned out that this concept persisted for a long, long time. Typical for this generation are the rear fenders, covering a small part of the rear wheels. Chrome bumpers, side strips, window frames, grille and exterior mirrors emphasize exclusivity. Because the classic roadster certainly is!
Interior
Whoever opens the door of the 350 SL enters a super chic brown leather time machine. Both color and condition are sublime. We never knew yellow and brown went together that well… Leave the black soft-top or hardtop to it and get ready to experience the real roadster feel. Special options are the electric window controls and electric antenna. It’s also striking that the design of the dashboard is somehow reminiscent of that of contemporary models. The way in which all parts fit together and the classy woodwork is extended, makes this a Benz for eternity. A museum piece, a work of art but also a pure driver’s car.
Technique & performance
Just like the 3.5 liter 8-cylinder, the transmission is in excellent shape too. This 350 SL runs and changes gears smoothly! With barely 114,000 kilometers driven in 45 years, the Benz has all the potential to have fun with for a very, very long time. We offer the iconic SL-Class including a wonderful V8 roar that allows the magical Mercedes feeling to enter your soul in an unfiltered way. Time to plan that road trip to the Netherlands straight away…
Kind regards,
Prins Classics.
