Prologue

Mercedes-Benz 250 SL automaat

Some people call us ‘lucky’ to have so many unique vehicles for sale. Sure, we admit to be extremely fortunate to get our hands on unique cars like this stunning 1968 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL. The first thing you’ll notice is the extraordinary triple blue configuration. Stylish as the Mercedes 250 SL is, we wouldn’t even have to discuss the technique. Although we think it’s worth mentioning that this is a more powerful version of the 230 SL. In terms of comfort, the Mercedes Sport Leicht also improved, because our version has disc brakes at the front and the rear. However, no one will stop you from visiting the Netherlands soon…

History
The Mercedes-Benz 250 SL belongs to the W113 series which is the 2nd generation SL-Class. Unlike its predecessor, whose top model “Gullwing” was a coupe, the W113 is always a convertible. It laid an important foundation for future models, because from then on, the Mercedes SL always had a removable rooftop. If there’s one car that can make us believe that the world’s most beautiful cars are not only made in Italy, it’s this one. And it’s exactly this country where the German was restored. So it won’t be a surprise if you discover some Italian flair here and there…

Exterior
The SL W113 is a lot sleeker than its iconic predecessor; another trend that Mercedes continued to follow in the next SL-Class generations, at least up to generation 6. The current SL seems to show slightly more similarities with the original model, the W121. Typical W113 characteristics are the vertically positioned headlight units, creating extra space for an extremely wide grille. Furthermore, our star among the classic convertibles has a superb delicate shape, while the dark blue bodywork emphasizes the timeless elegance of the Mercedes SL. A matching blue soft-top, shiny chrome parts and a white finish on the tires make the 250 SL incredibly classy, like in a class of its own. Also note the covers in the heart of the wheels: the blue returns and is once again surrounded by chrome.

Interior
Did you know that the steering wheel has exactly the same design as the other wheels? Including a dark blue heart, chrome rim and a white circle around it. Or cream white in this case, just like the gear knob. Also there are blue leather seats, a blue dashboard and blue door trim. Gauges, meters, ashtray, dashboard finish, ventilation grilles, the gear mechanism, door frames + handles, as well as the time-correct radio: it’s all covered in chrome. Welcome to the 60s! The fact that a blue finish was chosen for the floor too, says a lot about the great taste of the creator of this true masterpiece. But is it German or Italian?

Technique
The Mercedes-Benz 250 SL is a further developed and improved version of the 230 SL. The numbers refer to the engine capacity of the Benz. In our case, it’s 2.5 liters, which produces 150 hp and 216 Nm of torque; an upgrade of 20 Nm. The enlarged fuel tank plus the use of additional rear brake discs underline the fact that the Mercedes 250 SL is even more a genuine driver’s car. Those who opted for the automatic transmission was given access to 4 gears; just enough to get the sweet 6-cylinder in-line engine running smoothly. How quickly do you think you can get to Holland?

Kind regards,
team Prins.
