History
In 1996, the Ferrari 550 Maranello got the honor of succeeding the F512 M. Yet it’s impossible to compare the younger classic with this Testarossa evolution. Starting with the technique: the 12-cylinder was placed in front instead of behind the seats. According to Ferrari, the Testarossa was actually meant to be a GT. With the Maranello, the Italians made the model also look like this. Besides, it was the first time since the legendary Daytona that the mythical car manufacturer installed a V12 in the nose. Many would follow afterwards… This stunning car was built 2 years after the year of introduction and newly registered in the Netherlands. The service history is complete and fully demonstrable, as is the original documentation including all Ferrari books. Looks perfect on paper, looks perfect in real life!
Exterior
For a 90s Ferrari, the 550 is in particular a very elegant appearance. Despite or because of that, we regularly see the 2-seater GT lookalike in fiery Rosso Corsa. Gray or black was hot too. But dark blue? That’s quite unique. Especially if it’s Blu Swaters: a charismatic lacquer with a brilliant shine – completely in line with the timeless and sleek bodywork of this Ferrari! It’s a work of art being so beautiful in its simplicity. The Pininfarina design is like a classical sculpture: mighty and imposing without being artificial. The few details we see, were visibly styled with passion and care. A genuine style icon, the 550 Maranello! That’s why the Scuderia Ferrari ‘signature’ on the front screens shouldn’t be missed.
Interior
The interior is just as classy: an ultra-gorgeous combination of Beige and Blu Scuro leather upholstery. Just wow! The way in which the two different colors alternate is done Italian-style: extremely original and tasteful. Seen from the lightweight Carbon Racing Seats (!), everything within your field of view is Blu Scuro, including the A-pillars, steering wheel, top of the dashboard and the front part of the door panels + door handles. The classic gauges and meters are chrome-rimmed according to former Ferrari tradition and make us very much long for analogue times. Everything underneath is Beige. Well, the underside of the dashboard and the center console are. At the height of the perforated aluminum sports pedals, you will see that the floor is Blu Scuro. Door panels, armrests, rear deck buckles, seat and roof edges have a Beige finish. Sun visors, B-pillars and rear deck are blue again. And the same goes for the middle parts of the carbon fiber racing bucket seats, which also have a beautiful pattern. Almost too beautiful to sit on. Almost, because we bet it’s inviting to rest your head against the integrated Beige leather headrests as soon as the Ferrari V12 gets started…
Technique & performance
So there’s no lack of contrast and cachet inside the 550 Maranello. And the power is also great: 485 prancing horses are unleashed on the rear wheels. By modern standards this is no longer unique, but for a 90s icon with analogue 12-cylinder technology it’s very impressive. The mighty capacity of 5.5 liters prevents the need for help from turbos or other fun-limited systems. This makes the Ferrari V12 nice and pure. And it exactly sounds that way too! Especially when the 550 Maranello is pushed to the limit: while accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h within 4.3 seconds or on the way to a top speed of 323 km/h. The characteristic clicking of the aluminum gear lever through the artistic milled gear pattern is just as exciting. This is a Ferrari Classic as a Ferrari Classic should be!
