It was intended to make people forget the legendary Ferrari 365 GT/4 "Daytona," yet it turned out to be so special in its own right that it hardly needed the "365" reference at all. The first series of Berlinetta Boxers—the Ferrari 365 GT4 BB—proved to be the rarest: only 299 left-hand-drive versions were ever delivered worldwide. This car was developed to challenge powerhouses like the Miura and Countach from Ferrari’s eternal rival, Lamborghini. Our Italian thoroughbred is genuinely Italian, as its first delivery took place in Milan. Nevertheless, the Berlinetta Boxer has been on Dutch radar since 2002. Its maintenance has always been meticulous, and its history is fully documented and verifiable. The official Ferrari Classiche Certificate, issued in 2022, confirms that the excellent condition of this classic remains up to date.
History
Most people know the Berlinetta Boxer as the 512 BB(i). However, the original model is far purer, rarer, and thus more valuable. Its obscurity only enhances its allure, as testified by our valued customer who entrusted us with this masterpiece in 2022. In 2002, he added this 365 BB to his impressive Ferrari collection—but only after having it thoroughly inspected by an official dealer. Subsequently, the Berlinetta Boxer has always been impeccably maintained by a Ferrari specialist. In 2019, the timing belts were replaced at 61,500 km. Since then, fewer than 5,000 km have been added to the odometer. Invoices and service books are included to further substantiate the story behind this unique Ferrari 365 GT4 BB—a story that began on June 7, 1976, when one of the final five Boxers was delivered new by the dealer in Milan to a customer from Como, Lombardy. In 2022, we sold this unique BB to another enthusiast, from whom we’ve now reacquired it. Space issues, you see.
Exterior
It’s not unusual for Maranello to produce mid-engine cars today, but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, the 365 GT4 BB was a trailblazer. For the first time in the brand’s history, a V12 engine was positioned behind the seats rather than in front of them, breaking with a major Ferrari tradition. They had little choice, however, as motorsport was evolving and competition loomed, even among road cars. In terms of design, Ferrari remained faithful to its philosophy. Just like its predecessor, the Daytona, the Berlinetta Boxer was penned by design maestro Leonardo Fioravanti during his tenure at Pininfarina. He gave the "BB" an incredible combination of elegance and sharpness. Distinctive features include air vents at the front, the two-tone bodywork (black with gray in this case), and the rectangular headlights behind orange glass. The 365 GT4 version stands out from later Berlinetta Boxers with its three separate taillight units per side and an equal number of exhaust tips. Later 512 models had to make do with two per side. Notable by its absence are the NACA air ducts on the sides.
Interior
The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB was designed purely for performance—particularly on the racetrack. This focus on performance is evident in the functional layout and lightweight materials used in the interior. The patches in the Nero leather seats are reminiscent of the Daytona, as are the switches and slots in the center console. Why did Ferrari draw so much inspiration from the previous 365 model? The goal was to create a mid-engine configuration that was just as visually appealing as the legendary GT. A true beauty in the Brigitte Bardot category. And thus, the secret behind the BB’s name is revealed…
Engineering & Performance
Connoisseurs know that the Ferrari V12 engine in the 365 GT4 isn’t technically a boxer engine. It’s a 12-cylinder engine mounted at a 180° angle—also known as a "flat 12." Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda had already gained experience with this engine block in his F1 car, but for the first time in history, Ferrari applied the mid-mounted V12 (albeit transversely) to a road-legal racer. In the "BB," it had a 4.4-liter displacement, delivering up to 380 hp to the rear wheels. The character of the Ferrari V12, with its incredibly high revs, echoed the essence of Formula 1’s pinnacle class. No matter how powerful its successors were, none were as pure as the first series Brigitte—oops, Berlinetta Boxers.
