Prologue

Ferrari 365 GT4 BB

He was supposed to make the legendary Ferrari 365 GT/4 “Daytona” forget, but looking back he was special enough to not to be named after its predecessor. The 1st series Ferrari 365 GT4 “BB” Berlinetta Boxer also turned out to be the rarest: worldwide only 299 left-hand drive versions were delivered. The car was developed to put exotics like the Miura and Countach of eternal rival Lamborghini on the backfoot. Our Prancing Horse couldn’t be more Italian than this: it was newly delivered in Milan. Nevertheless, the Berlinetta Boxer has been on the Dutch radar since 2002. Maintenance is always perfectly executed, the history is complete and completely verifiable. The official Ferrari Classiche Certificate dates from 2022, confirming that the stunning condition of this classic isn’t something from the past.

History
Most people know the Berlinetta Boxer mainly as 512 BB(i). However, the original model is much purer, rarer and therefore also more expensive. In 2002 a highly appreciated Prins customer added this 365 BB to his impressive Ferrari collection. But not before he had the car inspected thoroughly at an official dealer. Afterwards, the Berlinetta Boxer was serviced with all the passion and knowhow of the world at a Ferrari specialist. In 2019, the drive belts were replaced, driven 61,500 km. That’s 3 years and less than 5,000 km ago. Documents and invoices are included, to endorse the story behind this unique Ferrari 365 GT4 BB even further. A story which began on June 7, 1976, when one of the last 5 built Boxers was bought at the dealer in Milan by a customer from Como, Lombardy.

Exterior
Making mid-engined sportscars is nowadays no exception in Maranello. But this hasn’t always been the case. In fact, the 365 GT4 BB was extraordinary when it comes to technique. For the first time in the brand’s history, a V12 engine was put behind the seats instead of in front of them. With this, Ferrari broke an important tradition. But they had to do it, because motorsport evolved and, moreover, competition was lurking on the street car market too. In terms of design, Enzo Ferrari fortunately didn’t deviate from its own philosophy. After all, just like predecessor Daytona, the Berlinetta Boxer was designed by the master called Leonardo Fioravanti, working for Pininfarina at that time. Fioravanti gave the “BB” an incredible appearance and sharpness. Characteristic are the air vents in the front, the two-tone bodywork (in this case black with gray) and the headlights behind orange glass. The 365 GT4 differs from the other Berlinetta Boxers having 3 separate rear light units per side and the same number of exhaust tailpipes. The later 512’s “only” have 2 of them per side, but added NACA air ducts in front of the rear wheels to it.

Interior
The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB was designed pure for performance. And especially for track use. You can see it by the finish of the interior as well: a functional layout and lightweight materials set the basics inside the iconic Ferrari. Nero leather seats with patches are taken over from the Daytona. Just like the switches and slots in the tunnel console. Why was Ferrari so influenced by the style of the previous 365 model? The ultimate goal was to create a mid-engine configuration that was just as beautiful to look at as the legendary GT. Ferrari wanted to create the Brigitte Bardot in its class. And here comes the real secret behind BBs name…

Technique & performance
Genuine fans know it: the Ferrari V12 in the back of the 365 GT4 is in essential not a real boxer engine, but a 12-cylinder built at a 180° angle – a.k.a. "flat 12". Formula 1 legend Niki Lauda had already tested it in his F1 car, but for the first time in history Ferrari also used the V12 mid-engine for a street-legal racer. In the “BB” it has a capacity of 4.4 liters, sending 380 hp to the rear wheels. The unprecedented high rotation of the engine refers to the F1 influences too. In short: as powerful as its successors were, not one was as pure as the 1st series Brigitte – ahem, Berlinetta Boxers…
