Ready for a throwback to the seventies? This uniquely beautiful (!) BMW 323i E21 is a true time capsule: completely original, fully equipped with period-correct extras, and configured entirely in authentic ’70s style. Finished in stunning Topaz Brown Metallic paint—most of which remains untouched since new. That alone speaks volumes about the care and devotion this top-of-the-line first-generation 3 Series has received over the years… by just two owners! Both sought nothing less than perfection, refining the E21 both visually and mechanically: from original Kamei spoilers to Alpina-style wheels, a 5-speed gearbox conversion, and a limited-slip differential. In short, a 3 Series classic worthy of any museum—yet far too much fun to keep behind glass. So here’s our call to action…
History
Today, the BMW 3 Series is a staple on roads worldwide. In late 2018, the seventh generation of the immensely popular sports sedan was unveiled. It has always been a sports sedan at heart, though the very first generation was only available as a 2-door—often referred to as a coupé. The first generation, codenamed E21, launched in 1975 as the successor to the 02 Series—another sporty 2-door machine. The iconic “Sharknose” front end, tapering inward at an angle, was carried over from the 02 Series. So too was the 4-cylinder engine… until 1977, when BMW introduced the more powerful 6-cylinder lineup for the E21. The 323i was the flagship model.
Ours came with an equally top-tier spec, including an Alpine radio/CD player, headlamp wipers, and a luxurious Sierra Beige interior. It was first delivered in Sweden in 1979. Mechanically, this BMW classic is just as sharp as it looks, with original service and owner’s manuals serving as the best possible testimony to its condition.
Exterior
Speaking of condition: the rare Topaz Brown Metallic paint is nothing short of immaculate. Most of it has never been resprayed, preserving its originality and integrity. This warm, elegant brown is a perfect match for BMW’s unmistakable 1970s design language—highlighted by that iconic Sharknose with its inward kink.
At the rear, it sets itself apart from later 3 Series generations with a wide, ribbed anthracite plastic trim connecting the taillights. The license plate is integrated into the bumper, beneath a chrome surround that looks factory-fresh and continues seamlessly around to the front. The dual twin-headlamp units on each side are a signature BMW feature that has stood the test of time. And yes, the famous Hofmeister kink was already present back then.
Additional standout elements include headlamp wipers, original Kamei spoilers front and rear, Alpina-style multi-spoke wheels, chrome mirrors, BMW-branded mud flaps, and even the original 323i 6-cylinder decal on the rear window. Calling it “cool” doesn’t quite do it justice.
Interior
Finding another BMW 323i E21 in this kind of untouched condition is rare. Finding one with ultra-stylish Sierra upholstery? Nearly impossible. This isn’t a dream spec—this is a spec you wouldn’t even dare to dream. Flawless, crisp, and beautifully preserved—this is exactly how a time machine should feel.
The headliner and carpet are both light in color, contrasting beautifully with the fully intact black dashboard and matching black leather 3-spoke steering wheel. The Alpina audio system, complete with high-quality speakers, does its best to compete with the smooth hum of the inline-six. In vain, of course…
Mechanics
Because nothing beats the signature sound of a pampered BMW 6-cylinder engine. For decades, this classic inline-six has been one of BMW’s biggest strengths in winning over the hearts of true drivers. Freude am Fahren—even back in the seventies, they knew exactly what that meant. The 323i was the top of the line in the E21 series.
But what if the drivetrain could be even better? That’s what the previous owners must have asked themselves—hence the 5-speed gearbox conversion and the installation of a limited-slip differential, elevating the driving experience even further. Prefer to revert to the original setup? That’s also an option for the purists. But first… maybe take it for a spin. Experience that 2.3-liter engine in action. You’ll understand exactly what we mean.
Kind regards,
