Read moreMaintaining a classic car is like maintaining a relationship: with enough love, care, and attention, it will stand the test of time. This beautifully restored Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider and its owner seemed inseparable for an incredible 32 years. That is, until the owner decided to buy a holiday home in the south of Tuscany. Staying loyal to Italy’s beauty, he found a worthy successor in a younger Spider. Though the 2600 Spider served as a family car for many years, commuting between Western and Southern Europe in a 60-year-old classic is not the most comfortable option in 2025. Fortunately, at Prins, we are happy to pass on the "Rosso Alfa" virus to the next enthusiast. The rich history and extensive documentation come with the car—along with an unrivaled dose of charisma. After all, few classics are as charming and elegant as this Italian thoroughbred.
History
The irony couldn’t be greater: trading in an Alfa Romeo for a house in Italy. In fact, the previous owner had always dreamed of bringing his 2600 Spider back to Alfa Romeo’s homeland. And he made that dream come true: in May 2022, he had the car transported by trailer to Verona. A local B&B served as the starting point for a Mille Miglia-inspired road trip. The journey spanned 2,200 km over two and a half weeks, completed almost flawlessly—except for one minor hiccup near Rome. Driving the Giro route and conquering the Furka Pass fulfilled a long-cherished wish. After years of using the Alfa as a family car and weekend cruiser, this trip was the ultimate highlight. The circle was complete.
However, parting ways was no easy task—there were simply too many memories attached to the open-top 2600. Like the time the police pulled the family over and asked them to move the child sitting on his mother’s lap to the rear seat… between the other four (!) children. Back then, seatbelt laws for rear passengers were unheard of. Years later, two of those children would use the Alfa as their wedding car. The Spider also shined at countless classic car events and even completed a parade lap at Spa-Francorchamps. Though it left six liters of oil on the legendary Belgian tarmac behind the pace car, it’s now just part of the car’s story—and rest assured, the pressure hose has long since been repaired.
One thing is clear: for 32 years, this Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider was considered part of the family. And family must be cherished. Thanks to careful maintenance and technical upgrades by specialist Sam van Lingen, this Italian beauty—restored in 1992–1993—looks as stunning underneath as it does on the surface. Registered with Superleggera and with a well-documented history, this is a classic to fall in love with. We even know that in 1993, the car was sold from one Alfa enthusiast to another. The first had to quickly liquidate his classic car collection to fund his business, but he was also the one who imported the car from Berkeley, California, in 1992. Back then, it was in a very different state from how you see it today.
Exterior
The Alfa 2600 Spider before you originally had an ivory-white body. While the Carrozzeria Touring coachwork was still solid, it was deemed ready for a full bare-metal restoration by Duijzer in Hoornaar. The original Alfa Rosso 402 paint was chosen as the perfect color for this Spider, and so it was reborn in red. The car still carries some traces of its American past, such as the all-red taillight lenses, but otherwise, this beauty is pure Italian. With its flowing lines and timeless elegance, it’s an icon among classic convertibles. It shares its stunning looks with the smaller Giulietta Spider—though only the 2600 features the signature hood scoop. This particular example originally came with a black hardtop, which was not deemed stylish enough. Luckily, through the Alfa Romeo Club, a proper coupe-style hardtop was sourced and custom-fitted.
Interior & Mechanics
Behind the wheel of this 2600 Spider, the driver is greeted by a beautifully reupholstered dashboard with classic analog instruments and even the original Blaupunkt radio. A five-speed manual gearbox channels 145 horsepower to the rear wheels—impressive for a car from 1965. Each of the six in-line cylinders features two valves, with a total displacement of 2.6 liters. More than enough to send Rosso blood pumping through the veins of any true Alfa enthusiast.
