Prologue

Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Superleggera Touring

Timeless, spotless and 100% Alfa Rosso. This fully, body-off restored 1961 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Touring with matching numbers (verified by Museo Storico) is more than just a rarity. It’s the kind of rarity every enthusiast has dreamed of. Until recently. Because that dream is now coming true at Prins. Reasons to discover the Italian beauty in the Netherlands literally don’t fit on a poster. That’s why we need to ask some extra screen time. And even then: we honestly don’t do the Alfa 2000 Spider Touring enough justice without a live meeting and a test drive… In very classy Alfa Romeo style.

History
The original wooden tool box in the rear left of the trunk: that’s the only detail that wasn’t restored. The rest of this classic is completely new. Some background information: the Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider is the convertible version of the 2000 Berlina, which debuted in Turin in 1957 as the successor to the 1900. Production of both the sedan and the Spider started one year later. The Sprint version would follow in 1960. The extra addition in the model name owes this Romeo to its coachbuilder in Milan, named Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. When it was delivered new on July 18, 1961 by a dealer in New Jersey, the original bodycolor was Alfa red. During the full body-off restoration process in Belgium back in 2010, the owner suggested to paint the Spider dark grey. However, when it was sold to a Dutch company in 2021, the restorer decided to bring back his major project into the original shape after verifying every tiny detail at Alfa Romeo. Our Touring has the time correct Alfa Rosso color ever since, which was only used between 1958 and 1962. Images of the complete restoration process are available. We call it: “The making of eternal beauty”.

Exterior
Only a few things match the nostalgia of a legend like the open Alfa Romeo 2000. The fire red lacquer on a bodywork with matching numbers and a professional glass coating, is one of them. Completely new too are the chrome parts, soft-top + cover. Even the original (black) hardtop is included. The Alfa 1900 successor, designed by Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni at Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, is less round than its predecessor. But still graceful enough to have a world full of fans at its feet – er, wheels. Characteristic for the style icon are the round headlights, wide air intakes in front – almost reaching the Alfa Romeo grille, and cooling slots behind the front axle. Truly unique is the immaculate condition. Classic car spotters can see that the double air intakes in the bonnet are closer together than on the European versions. They are separated by a chrome strip too. Speaking of which: the upper chrome strip on the sides of the Alfa Spider is shortened on the USA models. Just to let you know: this is exactly how it should be. And we love it for that.

Interior
Thanks to the black soft-top you already know what to expect from the interior. Inside, the 62-year-old Italian is again like new: the ultra-thin 3-spoke aluminum steering wheel, Nero leather seat upholstery, chrome-rimmed analogue instruments, 2000 logo + Alfa Romeo badge in the air vent, and even the Touring emblem on the dashboard looks like it has just left the factory in Milan. It’s true: this is more than a classic rarity. This is a genuine masterpiece on wheels!

Technique
Technically, the Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Superleggera Touring is based on the Alfa 1900, although the 4-cylinder in-line engine was upgraded in displacement (1975 cc) and power. In fact, with 115 PS, the convertible has 10 PS more than the Berlina thanks to 2 Solex sidedraft carbs plus a higher compression ratio. The maximum power to the rear wheel drive Romeo is given at 5700 rpm instead of 5300 rpm, which also benefits the sporty driving experience. The manual 5-speed gearbox guarantees countless enjoyable moments since it was fully restored, just like the engine (matching numbers), suspension, brakes and drive shafts. Of course you want to experience this in the open air as much as possible. How’s the weather in Holland, you say?

Kind regards,
Prins Classics.
